The Rat is (possibly) dying…

February 7th, 2025 by The Rat

Oh my gosh I feel so AWFUL.  My paws were kind of tired after jumping around on the keyboard, writing to all you kids and Mrs. Walle, and so I had a few peanut butter cups to build up my strength.  Well, maybe I had more than a few.  Maybe I had a LOT.  But then last night my paws started to shake and my little ratty heart went about 600 beats a minute and my ears turned all red and scabby.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, I started to itch all over.  I looked in the mirror and I was covered with SPOTS!  Oh, my aching tail.  I was so worried– what if it was the Ratbonic Plague, or the dreaded SCALY TAIL FEVER?!?

Oh, I feel sick.  And it’s hard to breathe… (gasp! gasp! gasp!)  Am I contagious?  Will everyone want to stay away from me?  What if the spots never go away, and I look like a polka-dotted furball for the rest of my ratty life?

Maybe I need some MORE peanut butter cups!  Yeah, that would cheer me up!

Have YOU ever been sick?  Do you have any good ideas for what might make me feel better?

P.S.  I hope I’m not allergic to peanuts.  Or chocolate.

  1. Mrs. Walle Says:

    Oh Ratty,
I am sorry you don’t feel well. It sounds miserable! I bet my students will have tons of wonderful ideas for you. Guess what…I had the privilege of singing your song that you sang at the party for S.P.A.N.K 2 days ago. The students ADORED it! Also, I HATE being sick. It’s the worst when everyone runs away from you because you might make them sick. Feel better soon!

  2. The Rat Says:

Oh, thank you for your sympathy, Mrs. Walle! And pity! Because I AM a pitiful rat–right now, at least. Blech. I hate feeling sick, too.
But I am ratly thrilled that you sang the song I composed for the S.P.A.N.K. party. Of course you may not have done quiiiiite as good a job as I did–but then, that’s hardly to be expected, it’s very hard for an ordinary human to get just the right amount of ratty squeakiness into the voice! But I’m sure you tried your very best. (Especially on the high notes, where it’s easier to squeak!)

  3. Max and Logan Says:

NO! DO NOT HAVE ANY MORE peanut butter cups. That is probably what made you sick! Yes both me and Logan have been sick and please just take some rat med’s and yes you are totally allergic to chocolate and peanut butter.

  4. The Rat Says:

Oooh, Max and Logan, really? Seriously? No more PEANUT BUTTER CUPS? (gasp! gasp! gasp!) How could I be allergic, when they have always been WONDERFUL before, and always made me feel ratfabulous? No, I think it must be something else. Like, I did a few chores the other day. Maybe that was what made me sick? Yeah, that’s it–I’m allergic to work! Whew. It’s a relief to have figured that out.
Well, I’ll take one part of your advice, and ask the doctor for some rat meds. Now THAT was a ratastic idea!

  5. Lorreign and Dazelle Says:

Okay ratty, so we have been sick A LOT! Like five times per year (well that’s for me). Well my friend get sick twenty times a year (poor friend! In the summer time.) and also you just have a fever (maybe) you are NOT contagious, remember people love you. The spots WILL go away. I have an idea! Try taking medicine and try to have fun!

  6. The Rat Says:

Hey, Lorreign and Dazelle, sorry to hear how much you’ve been sick (and your poor friend, too!) Maybe you (and your friend) didn’t eat ENOUGH peanut butter cups? I wonder why no one ever thinks of peanut butter cups as a solution to health problems? It seems so obvious to me!
Okay, I AM taking some rat medicine now, and I think I am starting to feel a little better. The spots aren’t quite so red–they’re kind of pink. And no one else around me has gotten sick, so (whew!) it looks like I’m not contagious.
How nice of you to remind me that people love me! (I suppose it’s because I’m so fuzzy and lovable, huh?) And I will definitely take your advice and try to have FUN! I think I am going to read all my favorite books over again, and then watch a few episodes of “Rats and Cats at War”. (I love it because the rats always win!)
