This is a big deal in Minnesota, where the summers are a short slice of fantasy, and the winters are long and all too real.
The thing is, it was very important to figure out what the story needed. It was crucial that I allow it to develop fully. And I had made a commitment to deliver the story on time.
But taking time off was important, too. I had hoped to spend a good part of the summer just refreshing my mind. I wanted to sail, and dream, and find beautiful little spots where I could play with ideas for future books without the pressure of a deadline.
I didn’t get that. But I got something pretty close.
