Every 33 Words (cont'd)
It was actually frightening how often I made a mark. But something about physically drawing that line on the paper, marking the point of greatest difficulty, helped me plunge back in.  I took my break after ten marks, and then sat down and did it again. And by the end of the day, I had something to show for my time.

But I did a word count for the day, and divided it by the number of marks I had made, and discovered to my dismay that every thirty-three words, on average, I had fought a serious battle with myself to just stay with it.

Thirty-three words doesn’t look like very much on the page. But over the length of a 60,000 word book, it represents a lot of combat. No wonder writers get tired!
